While we are waiting for our special order grout for the fireplace I decided to pick up a paint sample for the kitchen cabinets. Originally we wanted java cabinets, but with the installation of the darker laminate we are are afraid that things are getting too dark. I thought that a charcoal gray would be a good compromise and picked up Benjamin Moore's Kendall Charcoal sample and did this:
It is darker in person and really dark at night. Will a charcoal gray kitchen be too dark? I started playing with PS using this tutorial and came up with these "samples". The problem is our flooring is dark not light and I failed to notice that when I made these.
What do you think?
I just happened upon your site through Pinterest, but thought since no one had commented yet, I'd throw my 2 cents in - I really love the charcoal color! Love the floors too, and I understand your concern - is there enough natural light during the daytime and adequate artificial light at night? If so, I'd definitely go for it - it's really classy and very nicely updated, and I'm kind of getting over the java/espresso wood stain fast personally - this charcoal stain seems like a good next step. Good luck with your plans!
ReplyDeleteThank you for responding!!! Hubby and I talked it over and I think we are going to paint the uppers and lowers gray and the island white, maybe? We are still mulling it over! I appreciate your two cents!!!
DeleteI think it looks great!
ReplyDeleteSo you are in favor of the gray? Hopefully I will be able to share a real paint job soon! Thanks for reading!
DeletePersonally, the charcoal looks to me as if it obliterates all the charm of the different colors that course through the original. But I'm not the one who has to live with that. You will possibly question every second of what you do while you're doing it, but you will get used to the results and love it when it's done. Over time, you won't be able to imagine it any other way. I suggest once it's done, erase the photos of what it looked like before you started so you don't go back to them and think, "I should have done it differently." There is often second-guessing. Years ago, after buying an existing house, I tried desperately to even out decades of sun damage on a wall of Philippine Mahogany with all sorts of stains, and nothing worked. Out of desperation, I finally ended up priming and then painting the walls a cream color. I was terrified when I started. The whole room "popped" and I can't imagine it any other way now. Good luck and go for whatever YOU want to do.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading! Your painted mahogany sounds interesting. I would love to see it. Thanks for the encouragement.
DeleteI am SO excited for you. You have a lot of exciting projects in the works. The fireplace is beautiful and your cabinets will be amazing. I was just looking at charcoal cabinets- you are on the right track. Trust your gut, you have great style. :) Samantha

Thank you Samantha! I am excited too! I checked out that link and there are some amazing kitchens. I am itching to start.
DeleteI love the look of the upper cabinets in a lighter paint color and the lower cabs in the gray. Kind of trendy but I like how it breaks up the dark color.
