Cooking Challenge

I am not going to mince words: I am a bad cook. I do not love cooking, but I have come to realize that I can continue to make the same six meals the rest of our lives.  I am currently reading The Pioneer Woman Love Story and it is sweet. I also got her cookbook at the library and I love the simplicity of the recipes and the gazillion pictures! I think I may have to buy this one, but I do have it for three weeks and I decided that I am going to half to try as many recipes as I can channeling Julie/Julia Project!

On August 27th the Pioneer Woman will have her own Food Network Show. I am really curious about that and will definitely be recording!

Here are some of the ingredients that are commonly used in the book that I do not consistently have in the kitchen:

  • kosher salt
  • active dry yeast
  • bacon
  • garlic clove
  • onion
  • cocoa powder
  • half n half
  • heavy cream
I also do not own a pastry cutter, rolling pin (that is a running joke my house because it went missing one day and has never been found), and a biscuit cutter.

I guess I have some shopping to do!

  1. Kosher salt is a must-have. I use it 99% of the time over table salt. All of the other ingredients I can understand not having. I usually buy all of them right before I'm going to need them.

As for the pastry cutter, if you're talking about the wheeled device, you can just use a pizza cutter if you're fine with not having the wavy lines. If you're talking about a pastry blender, it depends on the use, but you can usually use your fingers just as well(if not better) than the blender could.

And the biscuit cutter. Those are great to have around the kitchen. If you get the set of them like the restaurant supply stores sell, you can use them as cookie cutters, fry an egg in them for McDonald's-style eggs, cut biscuits (of course), perfectly-sized homemade doughnuts, perfect pancakes, English muffins, play-doh molds.. the possibilities are endless.
